Papas João Paulo 2º e João 23 são proclamados santos

Captura de Tela 2014-04-27 às 21.41.04O papa Francisco proclamou no domingo seus antecessores João 23 e João Paulo 2º como santos na frente de uma multidão de peregrinos na Praça de São Pedro. “Eles viveram os trágicos acontecimentos do século (XX), mas não foram oprimidos por eles”, disse o papa Francisco.

A proclamação da santidade dos dois papas foi marcada por cerimônia sem precedentes na história da Igreja Católica. Segundo o Vaticano, cerca de 800 mil fiéis acompanharam o evento, sendo 500 mil na Praça São Pedro e outras 300 mil em telões espalhados pelas ruas de Roma.

A presença em massa de fiéis é explicada pela popularidade de João Paulo 2º. Da Polônia, sua terra natal, partiram 1,7 mil ônibus, 58 voos fretados e cinco trens.

Também houve críticas, no entanto, acerca da rápida canonização de João Paulo 2º, que morreu nove anos atrás. Grupos que representam vítimas de abuso sexual por padres católicos disseram que ele não fez o suficiente para erradicar um escândalo de pedofilia que surgiu no final do seu pontificado.

João 23 foi papa entre 1958 a 1963 e convocou a modernização no Concílio Vaticano 2º. A iniciativa deu início a uma das maiores reformulações da Igreja nos tempos modernos. Durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, ajudou a salvar judeus de serem enviados aos campos de concentração nazistas.

João Paulo 2º, cujo papado durou quase 27 anos, continuou muitas das reformas de João 23, mas com perfil conservador e autoritário, é visto com críticas por ativistas liberais. Um papa carismático, testemunhou a devastação da sua terra natal na Segunda Guerra Mundial, sendo reconhecido por muitos pela ajuda ao fim da Guerra Fria e derrubada do comunismo.

O papa emérito Bento 16, que se tornou o primeiro pontífice em seis séculos a renunciar, também participou ontem da cerimônia. Com isso, a celebração foi chamada em Roma de “o dia dos quatro papas”.
